DIY Foaming Hand Soap
I personally love foaming hand soap. It smells amazing and is fluffy and fun to wash your hands with. One thing I don’t like about foaming hand soap is how expensive it can be especially if it is the only hand soap you use.
I’m always looking for ways to cut costs and save. Foaming hand soap was one of the things I found. I discovered I could make it myself and help save money, so I figured, why not? And now I want to share with you the step by step guide I use so that you can make your own as well!
What You’ll Need
- Foaming soap pump
- Castile soap
- Essential oil
- Fractionated coconut oil (optional)
- Water
FOAMING SOAP PUMP
You’ll need an empty foaming soap pump. You can purchase new ones online on Amazon or you can save ones you already have. I just saved pumps I had bought from Walmart of Dial foaming soap. Once the soap was gone I washed them out and reused them.
CASTILE SOAP
I like Dr. Bonner’s Castile soap because it’s organic. I used their baby unscented soap but they also have other scents like lavender and peppermint.
ESSENTIAL OIL
Grab your favorite essential oils for scents. You can mix and match them as well if you so choose. I personally use Young Living.
FRACTIONATED COCONUT OIL
Basically fractionated coconut oil is just liquid coconut oil. I found mine online at Amazon. It isn’t necessary to include this when making your soap but I chose to for the benefits of helping to keep my hands softer.
WATER
Any water will do. I just used water from the filter in my fridge.
Let’s Get Started
STEP #1
Fill the soap dispenser about 1/4 of the way with castile soap. I just eyeball it.
STEP #2
Add 1 teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil into the soap dispenser.
STEP #3
Add 8-10 drops of your choice of essential oil(s) into the soap dispenser. You can do all 1 scent or mix a couple together. I was skeptical of using 10 drops because it seemed like a lot but the scent was way lower then I thought, even using 10 drops.
STEP #4
Fill the rest of the soap dispenser with water and shake to mix. Make sure to leave room to put the pump in the dispenser. The bottles I used already had a fill line marked on the back which was super helpful.
STEP #5
Let the bubbles settle from shaking and then enjoy your new foaming soap!
Congratulations, now you have your own homemade foaming hand soap to use! I made a total of 3 pumps my first time and only used a minimal amount of castile soap and fractionated coconut oil (see photo above). I still have plenty of product to make more. Think of all the money you’ll save doing this on your own. Plus it’s simple and quick to make so it doesn’t take up much time. Give different scents a try and have fun mixing and matching. Happy creating!

Want to make my own hand wash and shower wash
That is awesome! I’m starting to look into natural body wash and toothpaste right now!
How long does this soap actually last?
I haven’t kept track of the exact amount of time. It would depend on how often you use it like with any other soap. It just takes one pump per use. I believe it typically lasts a couple of months.
what is the shelf life?
I haven’t ever tracked exactly how long. But they last quite a bit. I go through the one in my bathroom faster because I use it more often but I think they typically last a couple of months or so. I keep one in all bathrooms and at our kitchen sink.
I absolutely love this breakdown. So quick, so easy. Done in less than 1 minute. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome! I’m so glad you found it helpful!
