DIY Homemade Ice Cream

DIY Homemade Ice Cream

There is nothing like ice cream on a hot summer day. It’s one of the few sweets I’m always down for. And there is nothing quite like the taste of homemade ice cream. It is hands down my favorite. I’ll take homemade over store-bought any day. If you’ve ever tried it I’m sure you know what I mean.

Homemade ice cream isn’t expensive or complicated to make either. If you’ve ever wanted to try it but didn’t know how I’ve got you covered. I’m listing out for you my step by step guide to making homemade ice cream with minimal ingredients that is delicious.

What You’ll Need

Items needed to make ice cream
  • Ice cream mixer
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • Ice cream salt
  • Ice

ICE CREAM MAKER

You’ll need a mixer to mix the ice cream. We bought a cheap plastic one at Walmart for $20 and it’s still going strong about three years later.

HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM

This helps with the consistency of the ice cream and flavor.

MILK

Self explanatory. Need this for texture and flavor.

SUGAR

You’ve got to be able to make your ice cream sweet.

VANILLA EXTRACT

This gives you that yummy vanilla flavor. I personally love plain vanilla ice cream, especially when it’s homemade. You could also use other flavored extracts for different flavors.

ICE CREAM SALT

Yes, it is different than regular salt. They are much bigger pieces and it is essential to helping harden your ice cream.

ICE

I like to use crushed ice so that I can fit more pieces into cracks in the ice cream mixer.

Let’s Get Started

STEP #1
Combine the following ingredients into the ice cream mixer:

  • 2 cups of heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

STEP #2
Put the lid on and secure mixer in place.

STEP #3
Fill both sides of the mixer with ice and put ice cream salt on the ice.

Pouring ice cream salt onto ice

STEP #4
Mix it all for 30 minutes.

STEP #5
Pour your ice cream into a freezer-friendly container and let it freeze longer. Or enjoy a little right away.

And now you have your own tasty bowl of ice cream! I’ve only done vanilla ice cream to date but I’m planning to try a mint one next. You can get creative and play around with other flavors. Happy creating!

  1. So fun! I remember my grandparents making homemade strawberry ice cream during the hot summers. Such a good memory, and one I hope my little one will experience with her own grandparents!

  2. I have always wanted to make ice cream at home. Thank you so much for the recipe. I think it would be perfect to make with the kiddos now that we are at home so much.
