DIY Wizard of Oz Birthday Party

DIY Wizard of Oz Birthday Party

For my daughter’s 4th birthday, I let her pick her party theme. She wanted to go with her favorite movie obsession at the time which was “The Wizard of Oz”, and she even asked me to make her a Dorothy dress.

Since The Wizard of Oz is also one of my favorite movies I was so excited to create a birthday around it. I had a blast searching for ideas and making this theme come to life! There are so many cute ideas it was hard to pick only a couple. This is ultimately what I came up with.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Blue gingham cotton fabric
  • Yellow cotton fabric
  • String
  • White construction paper
  • Letter stencils
  • Red marker
  • Scissors
  • Hole puncher
  • Tape

Step by Step Guide:

  1. Cut the blue gingham fabric into strips. I did about two inches wide and about 12 inches long. You’ll need 9 total.
  2. Cut the yellow fabric into strips. I did about two inches wide and about 12 inches long. You’ll need 9 total.
  3. Using the letter stencils – spell out/color the words Happy Birthday My Pretty” with a red marker onto the white construction paper.
  4. Cut all the letters out individually. I cut the pieces into oval shapes.
  5. Using a hole puncher (pen or scissors also work if you don’t have a hole puncher) punch a small hole at the top of each letter shape.
  6. Cut your string into three pieces. Make sure each is long enough for the letters you’ll use on them. I put “Happy” on the first string, “Birthday” on the second, and “My Pretty” on the third. I used twine for string.
  7. String each letter onto their respective strings through the hole punched hole.
  8. Tie the blue gingham fabric and yellow fabric between each letter. Tie them every other one.
  9. Hang and tape each string to the wall.

Birthday Outfit

Oz birthday t-shirt

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • White t-shirt
  • Yellow, white, sparkling red, and blue fabric paint
  • Paintbrush

Step by Step Guide:

  1. Paint a big yellow 4 onto the center of the shirt. Let it dry.
  2. Paint white lines throughout the yellow 4 to make it look like yellow bricks. Let it dry. (I had to do multiple layers of it because the white is lighter than the yellow paint. Let each layer drive before adding another).
  3. Paint red ruby slippers by the bottom left side of the number 4. Let it dry.
  4. Paint a blue bow on the top right corner of the number 4. Let it dry.
  5. Do any paint touch ups to darken the colors and let it dry.

Cupcakes

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Cake mix
  • Flower cupcake liners
  • Purple icing
  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Candle

Step by Step Guide:

  1. Mix and bake the cake mix into the flower cupcake liners. You could also do a regular cake if you prefer.
  2. After the cupcakes cool, put the icing on them.
  3. Add sprinkles onto the icing.
  4. Top it off with a candle.

Poppy Flowers

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Red and black tissue paper
  • Floral stem wire
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Step by Step Guide:

  1. Stack 2-3 pieces of red tissue paper on top of each other.
  2. Fold the red tissue paper pile back and forth up like a paper fan.
  3. Fold the stack again from the center and cut a little slit into the middle.
  4. Put cut and crumpled pieces of tissue paper on the black tissue paper.
  5. Wrap the black tissue paper around the crumpled pieces (like a ball).
  6. Place the balled-up black tissue paper through the hole of the red paper. Keep the rounded part on the top.
  7. Tie the stem wire securely around the black and red tissue paper. Tape into place, if needed.
  8. Spread the red pieces of tissue paper to look like opened flower petals.

Dorothy Dress

My daughter asked me to make her a Dorothy dress. So I bought a simple jumper dress pattern and made one out of blue gingham cotton fabric.

Watch the Movie

To tie in the theme, we also had a fun family movie night by watching The Wizard of Oz movie.

This theme has been one of my favorites that we’ve done so far. It was so cute, fun, and unique! I hope these ideas help inspire you to create your own Wizard of Oz-themed party. Happy creating!

Sincerely, Stephanie logo
